My schedule finally lined up to meet the group out of Redlands that does a fly-in somewhere each month. I invited my good friend Kevin to come along on the trip. Kern Valley (L05) Airport sits at the mouth of the canyon where the Kern River dumps into Lake Isabella. It's a really fun approach that has you hug the side of the canyon on downwind and turn base between a couple more hills to roll out on final right over the Kern River. The flight back I think every glider in the Antelope Valley was out flying. Joshua Center was calling out traffic constantly. At one point a plane asked if the gliders were west of Fox Field and Center came back laughing, saying they were everywhere from Agua Dulce to all the way north of Mohave. That's probably somewhere around 500 sq miles of airspace. Due to operator error (mine) the comms don't start until 52 seconds in. I hope you enjoy the video. We were on descent back into Fullerton (KFUL) when a flock of 8 seagulls flashed past us. There wasn't any time for reaction. Thankfully they all dove away and there was no bird strike. The advice to avoid bird strikes is to "fly high" but eventually you must descend. The statistics say 90% of bird strikes occur below 3,000' AGL (above ground level). The other advice is not to fly under a bird and not to dive. A bird's natural instinct when threatened is to dive. Marie Osmond put on an incredible concert with the Utah Tech Orchestra for their 20th Annual Fire and Ice Gala which provides scholarships for needs-based students. My youngest son Jarom had the trumpet solo and nailed it! A 4 hour drive, or 1 hour flight, you make the call. Join me on the camping and fishing trip to the Kern Valley airport on the banks of Lake Isabella. The West Coast Mooney Club had a fly-in campout and were joined the second night by some members of the San Diego 99's. The weather was perfect, the campfire conversations were great, and the river was beautiful. I had three fish on the hook but didn't land any, but as the song says, "A bad day of fishin' beats a good day of anything else." Full write up on the trip over on my blog. I flew myself to the Kern River to go fishing.
A lesson in how not to call up the Tower on first contact. There are three call ups in the video. The first is Riverside and he had to drag out all the information from me. Looking back on the calls it makes me look like a student pilot on their first cross-country solo. Slightly embarrassing as I'm almost 1000 hours into flying. The second two, Chino and Ontario, are much better examples of what to do on first call up to the tower. The amount of radio time taken to convey the same information is greatly reduced. Some of the best views flying are breaking out of the clouds. We took off into an overcast sky just before dawn from Fullerton (KFUL). The cloud base was at about 2,900'. After around 10 minutes of flying in the clouds we broke out into an incredible sunrise at 6,100'! The sun was coming in between the layers with the light reflecting off the layer of clouds below onto the layer still above us, it was breathtaking! For purposes of the video the clearance is cut down. What does a full clearance sound like? You can read the transcription below. The tower at Fullerton was closed so I called up ATC on my cellphone connected to my headset via Bluetooth through my PMA450B audio panel. At first he had a hard time locating it, but finally found it. All the numbers are spelled out because that is how you read it. For example, 1015E is read as one-zero-one-five-echo. ATC: “Hello” Me: “Hello, Mooney one-zero-one-five-echo, on the ground at Fullerton ready to copy IFR.” ATC: “Standby” ATC: “And you filed the route to where?” Me: “Provo, Papa Victor Uniform.” ATC: “Papa Victor Uniform, and what’s your type aircraft?” Me: “It’s a Mooney M20 Papa.” ATC: “And you’re at Fullerton, looking, what’s the name of that airport?” Me: “Provo Municipal, in Utah.” ATC: “Provo, ok, and you filed, uh, when did you file? I’m looking for it. Right now I don’t see anything, one-zero-one-five-echo.” Me: “Yeah, one-zero-one-five-echo, I filed yesterday evening, it was showing accepted for a six am departure, we’re a little behind here.” (It was about 6:20am but ATC holds them up to two hours after departure time.) ATC: “Roger, standby, let me see if I can pull it up here.” About 10 seconds later ATC: “I pulled it up, let me double check that it’s good.” Me:” Thanks.” Another 20 seconds ATC: “All right sir, I have your clearance, you ready to copy?” Me: “Affirmative” ATC: “one-five-echo, you going to be departing off of runway two-four?” Me: “Affirmative” ATC: “One-five-echo, you’re cleared to Papa Victor Uniform via radar vectors to Anaheim One departure, Hector, Bravo Lima Delta, Mike Mike Mike, Foxtrot Foxtrot Uniform, direct. Climb maintain two thousand, you can expect eleven thousand one-zero minutes after departure, squawk seven-three-three-seven, and entering controlled airspace fly heading one-two-zero, off runway two-four and your climb to two thousand you can expect radar vectors to join the Anaheim One departure.” Me: “Okay, cleared Papa Victor Uniform, on departure left turn to heading one-two-zero, radar vectors for the Anaheim One departure, Hector, Bravo Lima Delta, Mike Mike Mike, Foxtrot Foxtrot Uniform, direct, climb maintain two thousand, expect one-one thousand one-zero minutes after departure, frequency 125.35, squawk seven-three-three-seven.” (He hadn’t given me the frequency but I already knew it from all the other times I have left KFUL) ATC: “Readback correct, are you ready to go?” Me: “Affirmative, about a minute to get taxied down to the end of the runway.” ATC: “Standby.” ATC: “Alright, one-five-echo, released for departure runway two-four, clearance void if not off by one-three-three-zero (13:30z), time now one-three-two-six and one half (13:26:30z).” Me: “Cleared for departure two-four, void if not off by one-three-three-zero, one-five-echo.” ATC: “Talk to you in a minute.” So come along for the ride into the sunrise!
