SOG, by John L. Plaster is the incredible account of the covert activities of the “Studies and Observations Group” (SOG) before and during the Vietnam War. Maj. John Plaster served three tours with SOG and tells the amazing stories of these men.
The SOG teams were all volunteers, made up of Army Green Berets, Air Force Air Commandos, Navy SEALs, and local indigenous people referred to as Montagnards. The book starts out a little slow as Major Plaster goes through an endless string of military acronyms and command structure, but once it gets into the events it is hard to put down or stop listening to.
This is a little talked about part of the war, but fascinating and a story that needs to be told.
From Publisher’s Weekly the book is “a true insider’s account, this eye-opening report will leave readers feeling as if they’ve been given a hot scoop on a highly classified project.”
The New York Times calls it “a detailed history of this little-known aspect of the Vietnam War…a worthy act of historical rescue from an unjustified, willed oblivion.”
